Is Hospice Volunteering for Me?
Hospice volunteers are a vital part of the hospice team, filling roles that include everything from direct contact with patients to helping with clerical and fundraising support. Hospices that are Medicare certified are required to use volunteers together with their paid clinical and administrative staff. Hospice volunteers describe their work as gratifying, intellectually stimulating, and emotionally meaningful. While hospices do require a lot of volunteers, we value volunteers greatly.
As a hospice volunteer, you need to be:
- Able to commit the needed about of time
- A listener, and comfortable in silence
- Aware of your strengths, limits, and when to say no
- Ready to meet the physical, emotional, and/or spiritual need
